Does Your Newer Argo Experience Steering Loss?

Does Your Newer Argo Experience Steering Loss?

Why You Should Upgrade Your Argo XTV Brake Fluid

If you operate a model year 2019 or newer Argo XTV 6x6 or 8x8, your brakes do more than just stop you; they are the heart of your steering system.  Model year 2019+ Aurora 8x8 and 2020+ Frontier 6x6 & 8x8 models are equipped with the Hayes brake system and is filled at the factory with standard DOT 4 brake fluid which can experience significant heat buildup, leading to "brake fade"—a dangerous loss of stopping and steering power.  The most effective and immediate solution is upgrading from standard DOT 4 fluid to Maxima DOT 4 Racing Brake Fluid.

Why Your Brakes Fade: The Boiling Point

Brake fluid is "hygroscopic," meaning it naturally absorbs moisture over time. As water enters the system, the fluid's boiling point drops. When you are constantly braking or fighting to turn in deep mud or snow especially with tracks, the fluid can literally boil, creating gas bubbles that make your brake lever feel "spongy" and unresponsive.

To understand the protection offered by Maxima DOT 4 Racing Fluid, you must look at two specific ratings:

  • Dry Boiling Point: The temperature at which brand-new, moisture-free fluid boils.
  • Wet Boiling Point: The temperature at which fluid boils after it has absorbed 3.7% water by volume (roughly equivalent to 1–2 years of service).

Comparison: Standard vs. Maxima Racing DOT 4

Upgrading to Maxima Racing fluid dramatically increases your Argo’s heat tolerance.

Solve Fading on 2019 and Newer Argo XTV Models

The 2019+ Argo Aurora 8x8 and 2020+ Frontier 6x6 and 8x8 models utilize the Hayes brake system with standard DOT 4 brake fluid, which is prone to overheating, especially when running tracks or operating in warm climates.  If you notice a "soft" lever or a decrease in steering responsiveness, your fluid is likely overheating and the vehicle should be stopped until the brake system cools down for safety circumstances.

By switching to Maxima Racing DOT 4, you increase your dry heat range by 176 degrees Fahrenheit over the standard minimum DOT 4. This "anti-vapor lock" formula ensures that even under the most severe loads, your steering remains crisp and your stops remain certain.  We recommend changing your steering and hand brake fluid every two years for top performance.

On the Frontier 6x6 and 8x8 models we also recommend adding a hood heat extraction fan to pull ambient air from the outside into the engine compartment and extract the heat out through the hood scoop lowering under hood temperatures helping not only the brakes but also engine performance.  Hood fan kit for the Frontier models is 900-0194-FRT and is available at Doc's Full Bore Outdoor.

Benefits at a Glance

  • Firmer Lever Feel: Higher boiling points provide more consistent, controllable pressure and helps prevent air-lock in the brake lines.
  • Corrosion Protection: Advanced chemistry protects your internal Hayes system components from oxidation.
  • Maximum Safety: Prevents "boil-off" that can lead to total brake failure in steep descents.
  • Compatible with all DOT 3 and Dot 4 brake systems.
  • 16.9 fl oz/ 500ml bottle is enough to flush and change fluid on an Argo XTV.

Don't wait for your steering to fail.
Flush your system today with Maxima Racing DOT 4 Brake Fluid for unparalleled off-road performance available at Doc's Full Bore Outdoor.
